Horlogerie Series

The Horlogerie series consists of re-creations and re-imaginings of the inner mechanisms of watches. The series is inspired by a fascination with the complexities of the timepiece, the mostly hidden artistry and intricacies of an instrument meant to simply tell us the time of day. The face of the instrument, like the various theories and conceptions of time to which we have recourse in our daily lives, is deceptively simple; but our interaction with the watch, much like our often unconscious reliance on notions of time, is arguably at odds with what lies hidden underneath. These works explore this tension between surface and substrate, concept and underlying reality, through the use of mixed mediums in a single piece. The tension is drawn out by the juxtaposition of flattened and simplified details with more realistic three dimensional forms, and by the image’s placement, as if floating on the blank page.
