Horlogerie Series
This series takes a close look and appreciation of the hidden intricacies and artistry behind the tool that measures, keeps track of, delineates… the phenomenon of ‘time’: the watch. re-creations and re-imaginings of the inner mechanisms of watches. The face of the watch, much like the various theories and conceptions of time (as physics and psychology) to which we have recourse in our daily lives, is deceptively simple; but our interaction with the watch, much like our often unconscious reliance on notions of time, is arguably at odds with what lies hidden underneath. Here, the complexity of the mechanism of the watch attempts to visually relate to the phenomenon of time itself (the relationship between time, space, gravity, light, the tension between quantum mechanics and relativity).
Through the combination of various mediums (ink, gouache, metal leaf, charcoal, etc., to establish a language across the series) , and selective editing (especially by omission or simplification), these re-creations aim to represent these mechanism through the relationship between mediums and substrate (the negative spaces of the page) on which these microcosms float.
